The Steel Box is an innovation/work space where you can generate ideas, learn things online, complete some work, or just soak in the grounding energy of nature. This coworking space in Coorg is the product of a DIY project on building a shipping container shop, so you can find many how-to blogs on this website.
The deck above the containers has a 360-degree view of the surrounding coffee plantation and is complete with several plug points and comfortable desks.
All it takes is a few moments of clarity and small imperfect steps, to embrace your creative passions and make a living from it. So allow us at The Steel Box to create an environment where you can commit to following your passion and making those small creative bursts, while in-between walking around the coffee trees, plucking a fruit, picking up a book to read, or just being lost in thought, amongst other things.
What do we have?
- An eco-friendly workspace in the midst of a coffee plantation, surrounded by nature all around.
- High-speed wifi through a fiber optic line. Please note that falling trees, limited technicians and other factors may result in some downtime. So we recommend that you carry a personal jio hotspot which has great connection speed, to use in case the wifi is slow or unavailable.
- Easy access and visibility. The workspace has been built using shipping containers and is located on the main road, in the town of Ammathi. This is a 20-40 mins drive/ride from all major towns of Coorg like Virajpet, Pollibetta, Gonikoppal, Siddapur, and Madikeri.
- Large and small desks with plug points and UPS backup.
- Since the deck area is elevated, situated above the shipping containers with no hard sidewalls (only shadenet), you should get a good mobile signal for making calls through networks like airtel. The design prevents rain from entering but allows the cool plantation breeze to keep things fresh inside!
- A creative vibe. The entire project of setting up this space involved creative DIY decisions and rectifying/fixing things as we went along. We hope that the place will inspire you to take an innovative or creative step, however imperfect or impossible it might seem.

- Let’s make this an easy decision 🙂 We want to offer you a simple no-frills place to work, read, create, daydream or just have a nice cuppa filter coffee, away from the distractions of the house.
- Creativity and passion can’t be forced; sometimes it just comes to you unannounced when you allow yourself to spend enough time on it. When things click, the hours feel like minutes.
- Coffee is on the house. If you decide to use this as your regular workspace, you can use the refrigerator too.
- We encourage you to bring your own food from home. And we trust you to not make a mess of the place.
- Self-service, community, and respect for nature are themes we resonate with.
